WorkSafeBC estimates that confined spaces are behind more than one death a year. The unique challenges and hazards posed by these spaces make it imperative for workers to be trained to ensure their safety and for companies to maintain regulatory compliance. Along with WorkSafe BC, other regulatory bodies mandate confined space training to ensure workplace safety and compliance. Employers are legally required to provide adequate training to their employees.
Confined spaces are areas not designed for continuous human occupancy, often with limited entry and exit points. Examples include tanks, silos, tunnels, and storage bins which are all places that workers may need to enter to inspect, repair, or maintain. Depending on the worksite, and the industry involved, hazards found within these areas can include poor oxygen levels, poisonous gases, limited range of vision, and a whole lot more.
What is Confined Space Entry?
A worker does not need to be fully inside a restricted space for it to qualify as entering the space —even just peering in is enough. This is because some restricted areas can contain gases that are so toxic that even being near an opening can pose a threat. Acceptable confined space entry practices involve the use of stringent entry protocols, the use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and entry by trained personnel only.
Why Confined Space Training is Critical for Safety
Enclosed areas can pose several hazards including small openings or structural obstructions which make entries, exits, and movement difficult. Apart from hindering movement, this can make rescue operations complicated.
Closed sites can also contain hazardous atmospheres, including insufficient oxygen, toxic gases, or explosive conditions which can change unpredictably—what is safe one day may become life-threatening the next.
Physical hazards are another real danger putting workers at the risk of falls, entrapment, engulfment, or drowning. Confined Space Entry Course Structure and Content
This course is designed for all skill levels, requiring no prior knowledge. Participants will learn to identify hazards, use personal protective equipment effectively, and respond to emergencies. They will also receive supplementary materials to reinforce their learning beyond the training session. The program involves both theory classes as well as practical training.
Trainees will also complete a knowledge review, answering key questions to reinforce their understanding and ensure they retain essential safety information.
Understanding Confined Space Hazards
Participants learn about the dangers associated with enclosed spaces, including toxic gases, oxygen deficiency, and physical hazards like engulfment or flooding.
Types of Confined Spaces and Risks Involved
Not all restricted areas are made equal. Employees learn to distinguish between sites that are Permit-required confined spaces (PRCS) and non-permit spaces, the protocols involved for each and how to identify various hazards that are posed in various work environments.

Although you may find online courses elsewhere that cover theoretical concepts, they lack the practical application necessary for restricted site safety.

Duration and Scheduling of the Confined Space Entry Course
This course typically takes an entire day to complete, including its practical aspects and evaluation. Between 4 to 7 hours.
Certification and Recertification Process
Participants who successfully complete our course receive their confined space entry certification along with a wallet card.
To maintain high training standards, we offer recertification only to individuals with proof of prior training from Clockwork Safety & Equipment Training or another recognized provider. In-house training from a previous employer is not accepted.

What Should I Expect During the Course?

We request all attendees to bring all site-required PPE including high visibility vests, hard hats, and work boots along on the day of the training. We also ask you to bring along any site-specific safety equipment you use so that participants can practice with it.
