Can you fail a forklift test?

Forklift tests in BC ensure operators have the knowledge and skills to operate safely and effectively. Like any qualification test, you can fail if your knowledge and skills are not on par with the expected standard. The specifics of the test may vary depending on the training program, certification body, and the type of forklift being operated.

Forklift operation demands a unique skill set that combines precision, knowledge, and a strong commitment to safety. Whether you’re a novice operator or seeking to refresh your skills, successfully passing a forklift test in B.C. requires careful preparation, an understanding of the rules and regulations, and knowing how to operate a forklift. Operating a forklift isn’t as straightforward as it seems, especially when trying to pass the certification test.

The components of forklift training

At Clockwork Training, our Forklift training certification program consists of 4 phases. A minimum score of 70% is required to pass our forklift training courses.

Phase 1: Theory Training

Trainees are guided through a comprehensive and interactive review of the operator’s workbook, which covers the following:

  • Rules/Regulations
  • Types of Forklifts
  • Main Parts and Functions
  • Forklift Safety
  • Leverage
  • Centre of Gravity
  • Stability Triangle/Pyramid
  • Safe Operation/Shutdown
  • Fuels & Batteries

Phase 2: Theory Evaluation

After completion of the theory training, participants will do a knowledge review test with multiple choice, true/false, and essay-type questions. These tests are graded, returned to the trainees, and then reviewed as a group to ensure proper retention.

Phase 3: Practical Training

Hands-on training is critical when it comes to forklift training. We are a mobile training company. We arrive at your workplace and teach your employees what they need to know using the equipment that they work with daily.

Trainees are shown the pre-use inspection, safe operating procedures, and machine controls and are given time to practice under the supervision of the program trainer.

Phase 4: Practical Evaluation

Trainees are assessed for a minimum skill level and then individually evaluated using the equipment. Trainees will conduct a series of skill-reinforcing scenarios. After the evaluation, trainees are debriefed about their performance and then given the opportunity to address any issues they may have. At the end of the program, every trainee’s records will be handed to the employer or trainee.
