A Respirator Only Works When It Fits
Providing workers with the right respirator is only the first step. If the mask does not form a secure seal against the wearer’s face, contaminated air can leak around the edges and reduce the protection the equipment is meant to provide.
Respirator fit testing helps employers confirm that each worker is using the correct make, model, style, and size before entering an environment with airborne hazards. In this guide, we explain who needs testing, the different fit test methods, what workers can expect, and how proper testing supports a safer, more compliant workplace.
What Is Respirator Fit Testing, And Why Is It Important?
Respirator fit testing is a critical process used to determine whether a respirator properly fits an individual’s face, ensuring adequate protection against airborne contaminants. A poorly fitting respirator can compromise the safety and health of the wearer by allowing harmful airborne particles or vapours to bypass the seal.
The fit test involves a series of steps designed to verify that the selected respirator fits correctly and provides an effective seal before being used in a hazardous work environment.

Which Respirators Require Fit Testing in Coquitlam?
Any tight-fitting respirator that relies on a secure seal against the wearer’s face must be fit tested. Without a proper seal, contaminated air can leak around the edges of the respirator and reduce the level of protection it provides.
Also, anyone required to wear a respirator as part of their job, such as healthcare workers, construction workers, and industrial workers, should undergo a respirator fit test. Fit testing ensures the respirator has a proper seal and protects against harmful airborne particles.
Respirators that commonly require fit testing include:
- Disposable filtering facepiece respirators, such as N95 masks
- Half-face respirators
- Full-face respirators
- Tight-fitting self-contained breathing apparatus, also known as SCBA
Fit testing is completed for a specific respirator make, model, style, and size. If a worker changes to a different respirator, they must be tested again to confirm that the new equipment creates an effective seal.
Who Can Conduct Respirator Fit Testing in Coquitlam?
Respirator fit testing must be completed by a competent fit tester who understands the testing method being used and can confirm that the respirator creates an effective seal.
Under CSA Standard Z94.4-18 (R2023), the fit tester should have the knowledge, training, and experience needed to conduct either qualitative or quantitative fit testing correctly. Their responsibilities may include:
- Confirming that the worker is eligible to wear a respirator
- Conducting sensitivity screening when required
- Checking the respirator’s seal, comfort, and overall fit
- Explaining and completing the required fit test exercises
- Interpreting the test results
- Recording the worker, respirator, and test results
- Calibrating quantitative fit testing equipment and recognizing when maintenance or recalibration is needed.

What can you expect during the test?

1 – Documentation & Record Setup
The fit test begins with completing the required documentation and establishing the participant’s fit test record for proof of completion.
2 – Seal Fit Checks
The test proceeds with positive and negative pressure seal checks to ensure the respirator is fitting properly and that no air leakage is occurring around the seal.
3 – Fit Testing Procedure
Once an acceptable seal has been achieved, the fit testing procedure begins. During this stage, a specific testing agent is introduced around the respirator while the participant performs a series of movements and exercises designed to confirm the respirator maintains an effective seal.
If a proper seal cannot be achieved, an alternate respirator size, style, or model may be recommended and tested.
4 – Completion of Fit Test Record
Once the fit test has been successfully completed, the fit test record can be finalized and signed.
Respirator Fit Tests are Essential for Safety in Coquitlam
Respirator fit testing is an essential part of any respiratory protection program. A respirator’s assigned protection factor (APF) is only valid if the respirator fits correctly. Tight-fitting respirators, such as filtering facepiece respirators, elastomeric half and full facepiece respirators, and self-contained breathing apparatus used within a workplace respiratory protection program must be fit tested before use.
Once the fit test is complete, it is easy to generate reports using the industry’s most accurate, fastest, and easy-to-use fit tester to increase your staff’s safety, with software and features to improve your program’s efficiency and productivity from training through regulatory compliance reporting. With the help of a tester, you can ensure that your staff’s safety is prioritized and that your program meets regulatory standards. A fit factor of at least 100 is required for half-mask respirators and a minimum fit factor of 500 for a full facepiece negative-pressure respirator.
