Frequently Asked Questions
Do you need to be certified to operate a scissor lift in BC?
Yes. In British Columbia, anyone operating a scissor lift must be properly trained and authorized under WorkSafeBC regulations. Under BC’s Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Regulation, employers are responsible for ensuring workers receive education, training, and certification that meets an acceptable standard before performing potentially hazardous tasks like operating elevated work platforms (including scissor lifts). Certified training demonstrates that operators are competent in safe operation and hazard awareness.
In practice, this means completing CSA-aligned scissor lift training that includes both theory and equipment-specific practical evaluation, which is the kind of training Clockwork delivers.
How Long Is Scissor Lift Certification Valid in BC?
In British Columbia, scissor lift certification does not have a fixed expiry date set by WorkSafeBC. Instead, employers are responsible for ensuring operators remain competent and properly trained at all times.
According to WorkSafeBC, refresher training or re-evaluation is required when:
- An operator has not used the equipment for an extended period
- There are changes to equipment or jobsite conditions
- Unsafe operation is observed
- A workplace incident or near miss occurs
Because of this, many employers choose to renew or reassess scissor lift training every 2 to 3 years as a best practice to stay compliant and maintain safety standards.
Clockwork provides refresher training and re-certification evaluations to help employers meet their due diligence obligations and keep operator records up to date.
Who Can Take a Re-Certification Course?
The re-certification courses will only be made available to individuals able to present proof of previous training from Clockwork Safety & Equipment Training or another widely credible source. In-house training at a previous employer will NOT suffice.
